Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales commonly known as Edward, the Black Prince probably for his black armor he wore at the Battle of Crecy in 1346 when the English were victorious over much larger French army. Edward, the Black Prince also led other military campaigns in France including the Battle of Poitiers in 1356 which was one of the three major English victories during the Hundred Years’ War.
He also provided military assistance to Peter the Cruel of Castile and Leon and temporally restored him to his throne after defeating Peter’s rival Henry of Trastamara and his French supporters at the Battle of Najera (Navarrete) in 1367. Edward, the Black Prince returned to England in 1371 and died after a long wasting illness in 1376.
