The Tragedy of OTHELLO, the Moor of Venice<\/h2>\n

Othello is perhaps the most famous story of romantic jealousy ever written. It was popular in Shakespeare\u2019s time and is notable among his works for rarely being altered during the 17th and 18th centuries (when Shakespeare\u2019s works were rather liberally \u2018adapted\u2019 by theater companies.) In modern times, it has sparked debate due to its subtext of race and miscegenation.<\/p>\n

Othello is one of the longest of Shakespeare\u2019s plays<\/a>. Its exact date of composition, like much of Shakespeare\u2019s work, is unknown. Scholars generally accept 1603 \/ 1604 as probable, though others date it a few years earlier. The first mention of the play is in a 1604 government account of its performance at Whitehall. A quarto was published in 1622, and it was included in the First Folio a year later. However, the First Folio version is considerably longer, though it lacks about a dozen scattered lines from the quarto. Modern adaptations are thus based upon the First Folio version, and scholars surmise the quarto was either an earlier, briefer version of the play, perhaps intended for traveling companies.<\/p>\n

Who inspired the famous character of Othello, the Moor of Venice who is driven to near madness by jealousy? Once again, there is no definite answer, only scholarly conjecture. It is believed that Shakespeare<\/a> took the broad outline of the story from the Italian writer Cinthio\u2019s tale, A Moorish Captain. Interestingly, this would imply that Shakespeare had a working knowledge of Italian since an English translation of Cinthio was not available in his lifetime. Cinthio\u2019s story does not name the characters, merely assigning them roles such as \u201cMoor\u201d, \u201cEnsign\u201d, etc There is also the possibility that Shakespeare was inspired by a Moorish delegation to the court of Elizabeth I<\/a> around 1600.<\/p>\n

Much of the debate about Othello concerns the portrayal of different races in the play. Othello is a Moor, and there are various references to his dark skin and swarthy appearance. This is contrasted with the pure whiteness of Desdemona. Some scholars argue that Shakespeare\u2019s implication was that races should not mix. However, this is too simplistic an interpretation. Othello fits within Shakespeare\u2019s canon of tragic heroes, a genuinely noble man who is simply consumed by an overpowering feeling. All of his actions are spurred by Iago, who manipulates those around him with impunity. Othello\u2019s weakness is born from the great love he feels for Desdemona.<\/p>\n

And though the play is titled Othello, it is Iago who remains the most compelling and debated character. He is one of Shakespeare\u2019s great villains. His single-minded determination to destroy Othello consumes several lives, and he admits no regret or remorse.<\/p>\n

Plot Synopsis<\/h2>\n

Othello is a Moorish general in the Venetian army who has secretly married the beautiful Desdemona, daughter of a Senator. His lieutenant Iago secretly hates Othello for promoting another soldier, Cassio, above him. Throughout the play, Othello relies upon Iago\u2019s advice and never questions his loyalty. Iago tells Roderigo, a rich gentleman who loves Desdemona, about her secret marriage to Othello, whereupon Roderigo tells her father the truth. This is the beginning of Iago\u2019s plot to bring about Othello\u2019s demotion or death. He relies upon Othello\u2019s deep love for Desdemona, which makes the general prone to fits of jealousy. Iago tries to persuade Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are lovers. Iago\u2019s own wife, Emilia, is Desdemona\u2019s attendant, but she is innocent of his plotting. In the end, Othello confronts Desdemona with supposed proof of her adultery and smothers her to death. When Emilia arrives, he explains that it was just punishment for Desdemona\u2019s adultery. Emilia, however, realizes that Iago has tricked Othello. She calls for help, and Iago and Cassio arrive with other officials. When she accuses Iago, he kills her; Othello them realizes Desdemona\u2019s innocence. He stabs Iago, but not fatally, stating that he wishes him to live in remorse for the rest of his life. Othello then commits suicide with his own dagger.<\/p>\n

\nBut he; as loving his own pride and purposes,
\nEvades them, with a bombast circumstance
\nHorribly stuff’d with epithets of war;
\nAnd, in conclusion,
\nNonsuits my mediators; for, ‘Certes,’ says he,
\n‘I have already chose my officer.’

\nOne Michael Cassio, a Florentine,

\nWhat profane wretch art thou?
\nIAGO
\nI am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter
\nand the Moor are now making the beast with two backs.

\nIAGO

\nThis thou shalt answer; I know thee, Roderigo.

\nSir, I will answer any thing. But, I beseech you,
\nIf’t be your pleasure and most wise consent,
\nAs partly I find it is, that your fair daughter,
\nAt this odd-even and dull watch o’ the night,
\nTransported, with no worse nor better guard
\nBut with a knave of common hire, a gondolier,
\nTo the gross clasps of a lascivious Moor–
\nIf this be known to you and your allowance,
\nWe then have done you bold and saucy wrongs;
\nBut if you know not this, my manners tell me
\nWe have your wrong rebuke. Do not believe

\nslubber the gloss of your new fortunes with this
\nmore stubborn and boisterous expedition.

\npurse; follow thou the wars; defeat thy favour with

\nlove to the Moor,– put money in thy purse,–nor he

\nshalt see an answerable sequestration:–put but
\nmoney in thy purse. These Moors are changeable in
\ntheir wills: fill thy purse with money:–the food
\nthat to him now is as luscious as locusts, shall be
\nto him shortly as bitter as coloquintida. She must
\nchange for youth: when she is sated with his body,
\nshe will find the error of her choice: she must
\nhave change, she must: therefore put money in thy
\npurse. If thou wilt needs damn thyself, do it a
\nmore delicate way than drowning. Make all the money
\nthou canst: if sanctimony and a frail vow betwixt
\nan erring barbarian and a supersubtle Venetian not
\ntoo hard for my wits and all the tribe of hell, thou
\nshalt enjoy her; therefore make money. A pox of
\ndrowning thyself! it is clean out of the way: seek
\nthou rather to be hanged in compassing thy joy than
\nto be drowned and go without her.

\nnone; why, none: a slipper and subtle knave, a
\nfinder of occasions, that has an eye can stamp and
\ncounterfeit advantages, though true advantage never
\npresent itself; a devilish knave. Besides, the
\nknave is handsome, young, and hath all those
\nrequisites in him that folly and green minds look
\nafter: a pestilent complete knave; and the woman
